April 22nd
The rain started somewhere in the middle of the night. Pack down this morning was wet, but it wasn't raining hard while we packed. Heavy backpacks are heavier in the rain. We hiked (more about that later) to a shelter. It was raining hard when we decided to stay at the shelter today. We set wet tents up in the rain. A little while later, the sun came out.
We are damp and will be for the rest of the week it seems. The forest needs this.
We walked through the area that was burning last week. It amazes me how some things burn quickly and others do not. I'm very grateful that the people responsible for putting this out were able to do so and that it didn't spread even more. There have been some pretty devastating fires lately. There are some places where the AT seemed to be just enough space to act as a fire break.
We made it to North Carolina! There was a tree at the border that had a pipe in it. It seemed to be aimed at something but has become rusty enough that I couldn't see through it.
Soon after the border there was a tree that grew every which way. Nature is so cool.
Bel and I are having a hard time getting our hiker legs working. We only hiked around five miles. Much of it was up. We are tenting near that shelter tonight and hope to sleep better than last night. I like being near the shelter and other people, but not IN the shelter. The mice keep me awake in the shelter.
Since the sun was out this afternoon I took a walk on a side trail. It was so nice to hike without a heavy backpack. There were some lovely views between the trees. I thought I heard something growl at one point. It could have been the wind in the trees. Either way, it seemed like a good time to turn around.

Through the pipe in the tree. That might be acorns blocking the view. 🤣 |
