April 14th
It is taking us longer to do many things than we anticipated. We learned a lot today though.
Yesterday my right foot started to hurt. It was not the expected hurt of being on it too much. Since we were at Mountain Crossings, an outfitter, I decided to ask for help. I was directed to a very nice gentleman named Bill. Bill helped me learn a new way to tie my shoes. It has helped tremendously.
As we were finally preparing to leave, Bill came to the rescue again! Apparently we were wearing our backpacks wrong. He helped us adjust them differently. It has made a difference. I'm very thankful for all the help we got today. The people there were awesome!
Mountain Crossings is at Neel Gap. Neel Gap is just over 31 miles from Springer Mountain. I'm not sure where the statistics come from, but about 25% of the people who start the AT, leave the trail at Neel Gap.
Bel and I hiked on once we were done at Mountain Crossings. I'd love to say that we got a lot of miles in. We hiked a little over four miles and camped in a dispersed camping area. It seems we are in for a very windy night here.
I did a stupid thing today. I used my backpack as a seat. When I got up, my pants were wet! Thankfully, I didn't break anything. All I did was squeeze liquid out of the diaper wipes we are using to clean ourselves with. 🤣 That is part of our reason for not moving on from this spot. Wet pants. The wind and sun did a good job at drying things out. We were set up by then and stayed put.
The day was quite warm. We are going to make a much bigger effort to leave early in the morning tomorrow. We may stop for a longer period in the heat of the day, and then hike more later. I'm hopeful that this will work well.
Here are some pictures from today:

Thank you for being here and being part of my daily happy things. Stay safe!
