May 26th, Monday
Instead of hiking the AT today, I did a mostly walking tour of Antietam National Battlefield. It was fairly close to where I've been hiking. There has been a fair amount of Civil War history that I've been hiking through and this seemed like a good way to spend Memorial Day. I took way too many pictures but plan to only share a few.
A park member gave me one of those foldable brochures with some information and maps. Interestingly, I've gotten so used to digital maps, the NPS map threw me for a loop. I kept wanting to push a button so I would know where I was in relation to everything else! It makes me wonder how much an interactive map would cost for historic sites like this one.
Something that I keep forgetting to write about is that I seem to have acquired a trail name. While trying to describe something a few days ago the right words wouldn't come to my mind. When that happens, I tend to say the word, “Words.” The hiker was like, “What?” And I said that when I can't get the right words out of my mouth, I tend to say, “Words.” So now my trail name is Words.
