Stars - Picture Heavy

 October 19th

Happy things for Sunday, a day off from work:

  • Since I got a lot of sleep on Saturday, I stayed up Sunday.  I'm sure I could have slept more.  That was obvious from whenever I rested with my phone in hand.  Anyhow, a little after 4 AM, I went outside to star view for a few minutes.  I saw Orion, Pleiades, Jupiter, Cassiopeia, and a shooting star!  Had I pressed the button to take a picture maybe a second sooner, I would have captured that in a picture.  Using the app Stellarium, I have the images I took and a screen shot from the app that hopefully corresponds.

Okay, the app didn't highlight the constellation I wanted.  Orion is directly above Lepus, which is jumping behind the trees in my picture.

Cassiopeia is closer to the middle in my picture.

Since the app didn't label Pleiades, I took a screen shot later using search in the app.  I like the app, but I should have paid more attention.   🤣

And then I realized that it may not look like much, so here is sort of a key:
Within the circles...
Red=Capella
Green=Aldebaran
Blue=Pleiades

The bright one is Jupiter.

  • After that I did some laundry and puttering before hopping in the car and heading for the beach.  For a place that is only an hour away, I hardly ever make it there.  I arrived just before sunrise and thus got to see our planet's star rise over the ocean to bring us light and life.  After the sun was up, I took a barefoot walk on the beach.  I even let a wave wash over my feet.  It was a beautiful morning.  A few dogs came over and said hello.  I'll let pictures tell the rest.

Crescent moon and maybe Venus?  Oh, and I should wash my windshield.   ☺️

  • In the afternoon Bel, Corvidae, a friend of theirs, and I went apple picking!  We picked some Cortland and some Macintosh apples.

  • We followed that with a trip to Bear Brook State Park.  This particular part of the park I don't think I've been to since I was a kid.  Weirdly, I seem to have a memory of my parents paying to get in and parking, but nothing else.  It was another lovely walk.  This time with a brook and lots of trees instead of the beach.

Finished listening to: Just Kids, by Patti Smith.

Thank you for being here and being part of my daily happy things. Stay safe!
