May 17th
Sometime early this morning I heard it rain softly on my tent. I fell back to sleep and woke up to a mostly dry tent. There was a lovely breeze. I just stood for a bit and breathed in the fresh air.
It was time for me to say goodbye to this shelter and the people I met over the last few days. I took my time. The top of my tent was dry, but the bottom wasn't. There is no reason for me to rush. My drive for today was supposed to take under four hours.
The time to get between the hostel and my Virginia destination was extended with a nice nap somewhere in the middle. It was hot today. The sun beating on me, even with the car's air conditioner on, made me tired.
The internet had mixed information concerning the parking lot for the McAfee Knob so I wanted to see it today. One website said that the parking lot would be closed until 2025, but it wasn't specific about when in 2025. The parking lot was open and there were places to park. I plan to be back there first thing in the morning to hike up to the knob. It is apparently a very busy place. McAfee Knob is part of Virginia's Triple Crown. I'm hoping to do two of the three parts while here. Many thanks to TF for the phone call that helped me figure out my plan of attack. She let me talk out the mileage and potential timing for the upcoming hike.
