LOPs McAfee & Dragons Tooth

 May 18th

Pre-sunrise

Getting up on time is easier when I sleep in my car.  I was on the trail to McAfee Knob a little before 7 AM.  The trail up and back totaled around eight miles.  It was long, but very, very worth it.  McAfee Knob is the most photographed place on the Appalachian Trail.  I'm very thankful to the stranger that took my picture for me.  In hindsight, I should have struck a pose.  Here are some pictures:

Going up:

Mountain Laurel

The risk of norovirus is why I didn't go to Trail Days.

It's me!

Lens identified this as an Eastern Towhee.

Wood Thrush, Identified by Merlin App.

Looking down.

Another Mountain Laurel.

Getting down from McAfee Knob:

There is some kind of blue bird that I wasn't able to see clearly to identify.

Lens thinks this might be a hairy beardtongue.

Lizard type creature.

The new bridge that takes pedestrians over the street.

When I got down from McAfee it was a little after 2 PM.  For some reason I decided to drive to the parking lot for the Dragons Tooth Trail.  Okay, I had hoped to do both hikes today, but didn't expect to.  The gentleman that I met at the last hostel had given me some pointers on the trail.  I did not plan to climb up the tooth and I didn't.  This trail was challenging and I'd say a little more dangerous.  The most dangerous part would have been climbing the tooth though.

Here are some pictures from that hike.

Going up!

Lens thinks this is Silene Regia.

From the top!

There are multiple teeth, the big rock closest to the center is the tooth people climb.

Looking up the tooth.

Going down:

Look!  Room for my foot!

I didn't see this sign on the way up.
It wouldn't have mattered.

Thank you for being here and being part of my daily happy things. Stay safe!
