Weverton Cliffs LOPs

 May 16th Friday

My morning view, complete with dew.

Walking through the woods can be very peaceful.  Sometimes having a bug net helps keep the peace.  I left my car at the trailhead to Weverton Cliffs.  Another section hiker at the hostel gave me a ride to the trailhead at Gathland State Park.  After checking out some of the Civil War historical information at Gathland SP and putting on my bug net, I followed the Appalachian Trail south to Weverton Cliffs, then on to my car.  This particular section was not overly strenuous.

Walking along the trail through the trees on my left there were Boulders.  It was as if a wall of rocks were put there to be, a wall.  I'm not sure if this was a natural wall or a 10-20 foot high wall made for the Civil War.  I'm pretty sure it was natural.  Even so, I could easily imagine soldiers using an area like that to hide.

On the right side of the trail were trees.  The views through most of this area were not long distance.  I kept noticing what appeared to be yellow and orange flower petals on the path.  Looking up and around I couldn't tell where they came from. When I got back to the hostel I was able to use Lens to identify them as from a tulip tree.  I also saw Mountain Laurel, black raspberry blossoms, mushrooms, probably a part eaten Robin egg, and some cool rocks, all before lunch.

The Edward B Garvey Shelter is where I took my lunch break.  It is a pretty shelter.  It has a loft that is accessed from the back.

Before I reached the Cliffs I saw another rat snake.  If I have to see a big snake, I'm glad the ones I'm seeing are non venomous.

A short side hike off the AT is Weverton Cliffs.  I didn't get too close to what I imagined was the edge because other people were there.  It was still pretty with the river below.

Arriving back to the shelter shortly before the thunderstorm came through was fortunate.  The hostel is more busy now that the weekend is here.  I got to talk with hikers and hear stories.

Continued listening to: Hey, Ranger! By Jim Burnett.

Thank you for being here and being part of my daily happy things. Stay safe!
