Maryland LOPs

 May 23rd, Friday

Sometimes, out here, I forget what day it is.  This is Memorial Day weekend (I checked).  It is busy in the woods of Maryland.  The shelter area is full.  It is also small, so maybe that doesn't mean as much as I think it does.

It was nice to be able to talk with the hikers I met yesterday along the trail again today.  They both have connections to NH so I may see them again.

Maryland has a lot of history.  Much of that history is from the Civil War.  The Appalachian Trail goes by some of the lands associated with the Battle of Antietum.  I originally thought the battle grounds themselves, now I'm not sure.  I may investigate that more later.

There may also be Revolutionary War history.   I'm not sure.  The first Washington Monument is in Maryland, too.  Perhaps I should word that differently... the first monument dedicated to President Washington is here.

We had trail magic today! It included fresh made pancakes, yummy!!

I took pictures... surprised?

There is a date there that I feel is often forgotten. When we (people from the USA) think about our independence, we think of the year 1776.  There was fighting going on then, but it was another seven years of fighting before the British recognized it.  Washington didn't become President until 1789, thirteen years after the Declaration of Independence was signed.  Freedom was hard won.  Organization of a new country took time.  Our Constitution was thought about for quite some time.
